RBSRA REFEREE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
(FALL PROGRAM)

The Reading-Berks Soccer Referees Association has a Referee Development Program (RDP) that we would like you to consider participating in.  It is led by an RBSRA RDP Coordinator and is designed to support the newly minted and newer referee.  In addition to your participation, you will interact with an RBSRA Mentor, an RBSRA Buddy, and fellow referees who are new(er), like you.  The Program outlined below describes the RDP, as conducted in the Fall.  If you like what you’ve read and want to participate in the RBSRA Referee Development, send me an email to let me know that you do.

Definitions
  • RBSRA: Reading-Berks Soccer Referee Association - an organization in the Reading-Berks area whose mission is to increase the knowledge and performance level of all Association members, through training, mentoring, and assessing.  The Association consists of a Board and members.  Annual membership is $10 or $11 if paid on-line, through the website; www.rbsra.com.
  • RBJSL: Reading Berks Junior Soccer League - an organization made up of 32 clubs, primarily in Berks county, but also in Lancaster, Lebanon, Schuylkill and Lehigh counties.
Required: membership in the Reading-Berks Soccer Referees Association

Expected:
  • you will attend RBSRA's You're A Referee...Now What? program
  • you will attend RBSRA's CrossTalk program
Highly recommended:
  • attending RBSRA's On The Field Reading United Game (usually a late June game)
  • if offered, attend a tournament with an RBSRA referee crew that has at least one RBSRA Buddy in it
Mentor Project
The new referee will work with an RBSRA Mentor and sometimes another new referee.  You will be assigned to a game and the RBSRA Mentor will be at the field to observe you and provide feedback on your performance at halftime and post-game.  He/she provides guidance to the new referee(s) throughout the game and looks at things like:
  • Positioning on the field
  • Using the proper signals
  • Making the correct calls
  • Using the proper restart
  • Correct use of the whistle
  • Interaction with players
  • Managing the coaches and fans
Other areas that the RBSRA Mentor provides guidance to new referee(s) at the games are:
  • walking and inspecting the field
  • showing how to do a pre-game conference
  • interacting with the coaches before the game
    • getting the line-up sheet
    • checking player passes
    • inspecting the players for legal equipment and illegal items, like jewelry
  • providing a half-time and post-game performance analysis
  • handing packets that contain tips, links, and contacts that are useful for any referee
·       You receive a halftime and post-game analysis of your performance
·       You will be emailed a packet of material that you will find useful in getting started with your referee career.

You will get paid for your work as a referee, because you will be officiating a regular game as the assigned referee.  You may be assigned additional games with an RBSRA Mentor, if he feels that would be helpful.

Buddy Project
The new referee is paired with an RBSRA Buddy, who is an experienced referee.  Your Buddy is usually a buddy to several other new referees.  You will set up a way for you and your Buddy to contact one another and use it to exchange questions, answers, and information.  You can use your Buddy to help you work through game situations and issues that you encounter, as you begin your referee career.  If you have questions about how to apply one of the Laws Of The Game, you can ask your Buddy to help with that.  Your Buddy will alert you to upcoming events, such as RBSRA programs and activities, local tournaments that you might want to work, and EPSARC re-certification information.  He may come watch you referee a game, especially if you ask him to.  He might also offer to put you on his crew for a local tournament that he will be working.  The relationship that you establish with your Buddy is up to you, but we expect you to have one!

If you want to participate in our RBSRA Referee Development Program, email me with your request.  If something needs to be clarified, email me your question(s).
